Diseases of liver


Liver is one of the most vital organs in our body that performs various tasks which are essential for smooth functioning of the body. Liver performs various functions such as maintaining body metabolism, storage of energy, filtering waste materials, helping in digestion of food specially fats and then converting it into energy. Also, it helps in filtering toxic substances from the blood that could damage the liver and affect its function. Diseases of the liver refers to any condition that affects the liver physically or functionally.

Some common diseases of liver

Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is one the most common liver diseases that affects a lot of individuals that consume alcohol. Due to excess consumption of alcohol the scarring of the liver takes place that damages the liver to an extent that it loses its function. Diagnosing the condition in early stages is necessary as it provides the opportunity where scar tissues can be treated.

Fatty liver disease

Luminal stenting is a laparoscopic surgical procedure where an expert gastroenterologist places stents in the gastrointestinal tracts in order to expand the lumin or inner space of the intestine. This helps in correcting serious obstructions that create problems and clears the pathway for better digestion and absorption.

Autoimmune liver condition

Autoimmune liver condition is life threatening as it attacks the healthy cells in the body by mistake. There are several autoimmune conditions that affects the liver such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cirrhosis.

Genetic condition

There are several genetic conditions that one inherits from their parents that affect the liver and can be life threatening as well. Hemochromatosis is a disease that causes the body to store more iron than usual. This damages the liver if not diagnosed in time. Wilson's disease is another genetic disorder in which the liver absorbs too much of copper that ultimately damages the liver and other parts of the body as well.

Liver cancer

Liver cancer is one of the common conditions that is responsible for millions of deaths all around the globe. Generally, liver cancer develops in the liver but in certain cases the condition gets severe and spreads to other organs which is also known as a metastasis of liver cancer. Diagnosing liver cancer in early stages helps in saving lives.
